2023 Highlight: The ’Ringo Award

Accepting a humor award with a joke that flops is so... me

One of my highlights from last year was accepting the ’Ringo Award for Best Humor Webcomic. It was also kind of a lowlight. Here’s what happened…

I was nominated for two awards last year. This was kind of a big deal because aside from being nominated for the Eisner Award in 2007 and winning a Philly Geek Award in 2012, it’s been kind of slim pickin’ in the Accolade Department.

That’s not a complaint. I get to do what I love for a living. That’s always been award enough. But, y’know… a little statue now and then wouldn’t hurt.

So, I was overjoyed when I received noms for Best Online Comic (Shortform) from the National Cartoonists Society as well as a nod for the Best Humor Webcomic Ringo Award.

Phil Foglio was the deserved winner of the NCS Silver Reuben. But I was floored to hear my name announced as the winner of the ’Ringo.

You can watch the video to see the rest. In accepting an award for humor, I threw out a punchline that just… flopped. It may have been my delivery. It may have been too late in the night to try gags on a roomful of sleepy/tipsy comic creators. Comedy is tricky. Live comedy is murder.

I have the toe tag to prove it.

But hope springs eternal in the (sunken) chest of a lifelong cartoonist. It’s January, and the call for entries is right around the corner for the Eisners, the Silver Reubens, the ’Ringos, and the rest. I’ll prep my entries, cross my fingers and hope. Hope I can get nominated… hope I can win… and hope that once — just once — I can land a punchline.
